Letter from Your Elected Official: Jeff Hough

by | Apr 18, 2024 | Highlights, Letter from Elected Official, Newsroom

Summer is almost upon us, and it’s time to think about getting outside. At this time, we have a lot of great projects going on to enhance this summer’s activities.

I’m frequently asked about concerts and what shows we will have this year. We recently signed an agreement with Nederlander Concerts. Established in 1912 by David Nederlander, the Nederlander Organization is privately held and owned by James M. Nederlander and James L. Nederlander Jr., who also own and/or operate world-renowned legitimate theatres in the United States and England. We specifically chose to partner with Nederlander because they focus on amphitheaters and markets like ours. With their industry experience and relationships, we anticipate our concert series will get better each year.

Our team has done a great job rebuilding the venue’s reputation within the music industry, and Nederlander has some great ideas to help us get to the next level. We are excited to see what kind of new, diverse lineup we will build over the coming years.

The Wellness Complex is starting to wake up from the winter. Last year, we had some concerns about the conditions of the fields, and we have been working hard to resolve those issues. Additionally, we have installed speed bumps throughout the parking lot to reduce speeds and create a safer environment. We have hired a Sheriff’s Deputy for the park and will be installing a number of cameras to help create a safe and secure environment for everyone.

The Event Center continues to fill up with events. We are excited to have High School and Junior High rodeo championships back and to be the home field for the ISU Rodeo Team. In addition to those events, we have several national qualifier events for team roping, barrel racing, and other equestrian events. Rodeo is alive and well in Bannock County.

We have dedicated some of our remaining ARPA funds to make substantial improvements to the Fairgrounds in Downey. We are looking to add two new livestock buildings and a new office/show building. We have been working closely with the Fair Board and the City of Downey to put all this together and hope to have some of it in place for this year’s fair.

Another exciting project going on this summer is the addition to the Portneuf Greenway Trail, which will connect to the Wellness Complex’s walking path. We have partnered with the Greenway Foundation to connect the walking trail from our property to the portion of the trail that ITD will be building, which connects the trail from Pocatello Creek. If everything goes as scheduled, this should be completed in late summer.

As always, there is a lot going on, and it is an exciting time in Bannock County. Stay tuned by following us on social media or signing up for the Commissioners’ meeting agendas.
