Annual Pearl Harbor remembrance ceremony returns to Pocatello for 82nd anniversary

Bannock County Veteran Services is inviting the community to a ceremony honoring those lost in the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor 82 years ago.

People are invited to join together at the Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge on Thursday, Dec. 7, at 11 a.m., for a beloved Pocatello tradition.

The tradition was started by Pocatello local and survivor of the Pearl Harbor attacks, Christopher “Chris” Harame, Chief Builder retired US Navy Division of Seabee. Harame, his wife, and a small group of friends would gather at the Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge wearing Hawaiian shirts to toss flower petals into the Portneuf river, honoring the 2,403 service members and civilians killed in the attack.

Harame’s tradition faded away in 2013 after he passed. Bannock County Veteran Services revived the tradition in 2021 for the 80th anniversary of the attacks.

The ceremony will be held Thursday, Dec. 7, at 11 a.m. at the Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge on W Fremont Street. Local dignitaries will be in attendance and Hawthorne Middle School’s advanced band will perform a song for the ceremony.

Lunch will be served following the ceremony at the Bannock County Veterans Memorial Building, 300 N Johnson Avenue. The food is provided by a joint effort from the Veteran Services Organizations Auxiliaries.
