Convicted child molester receives 15 years to life

POCATELLO Sixth District Judge N. Randy Smith sentenced convicted child molester Robert Scott Price to 15 years to life in prison after a lengthy court hearing Friday.

Price, a former local real estate agent who once worked for the Pocatello Police Department, pleaded guilty to charges of lewd conduct with a minor under 16, sexual abuse of a minor under 16 and sexual battery of a minor between 16 and 17 after reaching an agreement.

Before a packed courtroom, Smith sentenced Price to 15 years in prison fixed for the sexual battery and sexual abuse charges and 15 years to life for the lewd conduct charge. The sentences will be served concurrently, so Price will be up for parole in 15 years.

I realize this sentence is not what everyone would want maybe not what anyone would want, Smith told a courtroom full of Prices family members and families of victims. But its the only one my soul could believe was wise and just given the circumstances, after so many, many, many lives have been ruined.

Smith said he considered Prices scanty criminal record and the public services he performed as a Boy Scout leader and for his church. However, he said he imposed a strong sentence as a deterrence to others.

My first thought was to make sure no Scout leader or church leader in my area or any area does this again, Smith said. He will never be around anyone again without protection present.

Prosecutors said they were pleased with Smiths decision and the sentence is what they requested.

Price is represented by attorney David Kress. He has 45 days to appeal.
